All you need to know and be aware about Ovarian Cyst!

Ovarian cysts are common. Often spotted during a routine gynecological examination, it can occur at any age in a woman's life.

What is an ovarian cyst?

An ovarian cyst is a tumor, usually of benign origin, that develops on an ovary. It can appear at any age, even during adolescence or menopause. There are two types.

- Functional: Because of the hormonal functioning of the female body. These are therefore cysts under the hormonal influence (pills, in particular microdoses, ovarian stimulants, etc.) which form, generally with each cycle and usually disappear spontaneously, within a few months. They can also form during the first 3 months of pregnancy. Functional cysts represent 90% of ovarian cysts.
- Organic: They are characterized by the presence of internal vegetations on the ovary (formed by fatty, bone, even hair, or dental tissue). These cysts usually need to be removed.

 Ovarian cyst causes-

Ovarian cyst causes include-
An ovarian cyst is most often benign. It can, however, delay the onset of pregnancy. In fact, during each cycle, the follicle, which evolves to give an ovum, enlarges abnormally without releasing an ovum, consequently preventing a possible pregnancy. If you are having trouble getting pregnant, this is a path to explore.
If in doubt about the nature of the cyst, your doctor will have it analyzed. If the tumor turns out to be malignant, which is rare, it is ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cyst symptoms-

The Ovarian cyst symptoms can be varied:
- Pain in the lower abdomen (on one side or on both sides);
- Feeling of gravity;
- Irregular periods;
- Metrorrhagia (bleeding outside of the rules);
- Pain during intercourse;
- Urinary gene.
If the symptoms are suggestive of a possible ovarian cyst, the gynecologist performs a pelvic ultrasound, abdominally or endovaginally, to detect it. This examination can possibly be accompanied by a Doppler as well as a puncture to determine with certainty the nature of the cyst and to set up the adapted treatment.

Ovarian cyst treatment-

The management of ovarian cysts or ovarian cyst treatment depends on their nature:
- A functional cyst usually disappears spontaneously. An observation period can, therefore, be useful in order to see if it resolves on its own. In the opposite case, hormone treatment can be offered (with a highly dosed estrogen-progestogen pill).
- In the case of organic cysts, painful and/or bulky functional cysts, surgery can be considered. The reference technique is laparoscopy.
- In the context of complications on a functional cyst (a torsion for example or if it ruptures or becomes infected), management is urgent. The pain is very sharp. Go to the nearest hospital.
- Concerning cysts appearing during pregnancy (especially during the 1st trimester), it is better to avoid removing them because they contribute to the production of progesterone, an essential hormone during pregnancy.
- In the case of ovarian cancer, the patient is referred to an oncology department.
